On Saturday, May 16, 2015 we held the PDGA C-Tier tournament, Women of Webster Fish & Game.  We had an amazing turnout with 36 women showing up to play!  All players were greeted with a players’ pack that consisted of a Green Light stamped Gateway putter of their choice, a Green Light stash mini, 2 stickers, a nail file, a package of tissues, a Sharpie, travel lotion, travel hand sanitizer, and a granola bar.  This awesome players’ pack was possible thanks to all of the tee sign sponsors that helped support our tournament!

The weather for the day called for a chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, but we didn’t see a single drop!  The first round played quickly due to the threesomes that filled 12 holes throughout the course.  We had an amazing number of prizes donated so there was a CTP on EVERY hole!  Erica Johnson came in from the first round with an amazing score of 52!  Many other players came in to tournament central with a positive attitude and shared that they had a ton of fun first round, regardless of how they shot.  After lunch the women headed out for the second round, all determined to shoot even better than their first round.

After the second round the women gathered inside to hear and see what CTP prizes were won throughout the day.  Some special prizes were given out before the CTPs, these included:

1. Traveled the farthest- Marcia Focht (New York) we also recognized that 3 of our women traveled over 200 miles to join us (Marcia, Becky Sonnheim from New Jersey, and Alicia Villnave from Maine)

2. Most Improved Round- Nicky King and Becky Sonnheim both shot 10 strokes better the second round, so they each got a prize

3. Hot Round of the Day- Erica Johnson with her first round of 52!!!

4. Newest PDGA Member- Valerie Thresher #75271

5. Longest PDGA Member- Becky Sonnheim #33754

6. First Person to Sign Up- Kathryn Gray

In the Pro Division we paid out 3 spots, their scores are listed below:

2. Dena Laudon          57+61=118

Our Recreational winner was Kelly O’Brien   84+79=163   trophy

We ended the day by playing a few rounds of Ring of Fire to win some prizes that were still up for grabs.  The first round of this we ended up having some technical difficulties  getting the discs in the basket (our first throw NONE of the discs landed in the basket) so we had 2 finalists play Rock, Paper, Scissors to see who would win the prize.  Once the ladies got the hang of the game, putts were being made left and right (Wendy Boutin was also putting while in motion on the swing!).  All prizes we given out and we all went our own ways after a great day filled with laughs, smiles, hugs, and overall happiness and camaraderie.

This day wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing support system that the New England disc golf women have behind them.  Julie Ferdella was the driving force behind this tournament happening and we can’t thank her enough for her continued efforts to grow the women’s side of the sport and for asking us to run this amazing event on her behalf. The following people made tee sign donations which helped pay for players packs, greens fees, and PDGA sanctioning fees.

Maureen McErlean, Michael Zorovich, ITC Disc Golf, Get Ripped Wide Open Tournament, Jay Nourse, Amy Streeter, Aaron Kaczowka, Team Webster, DSP Computers, NEWDG, Julie Ferdella, Bill MacWilliams, John Hollows, John Giampapa, Green Light Disc Golf, Plug My Band presents the RAGE Tournament, David Hoey, John Mucciarone, Team NASA, Discs Over Amesbury, Get @ Marshall Custom Glass Art, The Laudon Family, The ACT Tournament, Alicia Villnave, Devens Disc Golf, Hawks Nest Pro Shop, Team Crafty, Dan Valerio (in memory of Mike “Banger” Valerio), Good Karma Disc Golf, Team Buff, Team Maple Hill Blues, and Greenleaf Garrison.

Players were highly encouraged at the Players’ Meeting to read every sponsor sign and to remember that each sign was a donation to the day and also moral (and financial)  support for us all to have a fun day playing disc golf.  I also put an inspirational quote on the top of each tee sign.  These quotes related to competition, friendship, sports, and women in general.  Pictures of each tee sign are in the slideshow below.

Our prize list is also extensive and made the day filled with prizes for all divisions, and who doesn’t like prizes???  Our donations came from:

Eleanor Poore, Becky Sonnheim, Good Karma Disc Golf, South Jersey Disc Golf, Kelly Jenkins, Devens Disc Golf, The Hawks Nest Disc Golf, Jacki Bogan, North NEWDG league, Michelle Smith, Team Buff, Tim Carter, Kristi Bayer, Erin Tivnan, Green Light Disc Golf, Julie Ferdella, Rob Durant, Marshall LaFlower at Get @ Marshall Custom Glass Art, Maple Hill, Dave Jackson, Vibram Disc Golf, Steve Dodge, John Hollows, Pam Beaudry, and Alicia Villnave!

Overall it was a great day!  We couldn’t be happier or more proud to know such a talented and amazing group of women and we were honored to host this event!  We hope to make this tournament a yearly tradition that will grow larger every year!  So until the next time, let em rip and bang the chains ladies, you all ROCK!!!!!
